Introduction of First Aid

First aid is the immediate and temporary care given to an injured or ill person before professional medical help is available. It is an essential skill that everyone should learn, especially those working in technical trades such as surveying, where work is often carried out in outdoor and potentially hazardous environments. First aid helps to reduce the severity of injuries, prevent complications, and, in many cases, save lives.

In the Surveyor trade, workers frequently operate in construction sites, uneven terrain, roadside areas, and remote locations. These environments expose them to risks such as falls, cuts, burns, electric shocks, and heat-related illnesses. Therefore, knowledge of first aid is not only beneficial but necessary for ensuring safety at the workplace.

Objectives of First Aid

The primary objectives of first aid can be summarized as follows:

  • To preserve life: The main aim of first aid is to save the life of the injured person.
  • To prevent the condition from worsening: Proper care helps in controlling the injury and avoiding further harm.
  • To promote recovery: Early treatment can speed up the healing process.
  • To provide comfort: First aid helps in reducing pain and anxiety of the injured person.

Importance of First Aid in Surveyor Trade

Surveyors often work in isolated areas where medical facilities may not be immediately available. In such situations, first aid becomes the first line of response. Quick and correct action can prevent minor injuries from becoming serious and can also save valuable time until professional help arrives.

First aid also creates a sense of confidence among workers. When individuals know how to handle emergencies, they can act calmly and effectively. It also promotes a culture of safety and responsibility at the workplace.

Basic Principles of First Aid

There are certain principles that must be followed while providing first aid:

  • Stay calm and assess the situation: Do not panic. Observe the condition of the injured person and the surroundings.
  • Ensure safety: Make sure the area is safe for both the rescuer and the victim.
  • Provide immediate care: Attend to life-threatening conditions such as bleeding or unconsciousness first.
  • Call for help: Seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary movement: Do not move the injured person unless necessary.

Contents of a First Aid Kit

A well-equipped first aid kit is essential at every workplace. The basic items include:

  • Bandages and adhesive tapes
  • Antiseptic solution or cream
  • Cotton and gauze pads
  • Scissors and tweezers
  • Pain relief tablets
  • Burn ointment
  • Gloves and masks
  • First aid manual

Regular checking and maintenance of the first aid kit is necessary to ensure that all items are available and in usable condition.

Common Injuries and Their First Aid

1. Cuts and Wounds

Clean the wound with clean water and apply an antiseptic. Cover it with a sterile bandage to prevent infection.

2. Bleeding

Apply direct pressure on the wound using a clean cloth or bandage. Elevate the injured part if possible to reduce blood flow.

3. Burns

Cool the burn area with running water for several minutes. Do not apply oil or grease. Cover with a clean cloth.

4. Fractures

Immobilize the injured part using splints and avoid movement. Seek medical help immediately.

5. Electric Shock

Switch off the power supply before touching the victim. Provide CPR if necessary and seek immediate medical attention.

6. Heat Stroke

Move the person to a cool place, give water if conscious, and cool the body using wet cloths.

Role of First Aider

A first aider is a person trained to provide first aid. The role of a first aider includes:

  • Providing immediate assistance to injured persons
  • Ensuring safety at the accident site
  • Calling for medical help
  • Keeping the injured person calm and comfortable
  • Maintaining basic hygiene while giving treatment

Do’s and Don’ts of First Aid

Do’s

  • Act quickly and calmly
  • Use clean and sterile materials
  • Reassure the injured person
  • Seek professional medical help

Don’ts

  • Do not panic
  • Do not give food or drink to an unconscious person
  • Do not apply unknown substances on wounds
  • Do not move seriously injured persons unnecessarily

Conclusion

First aid is a vital skill that can make a significant difference in emergency situations. In the Surveyor trade, where work conditions can be unpredictable, having knowledge of first aid ensures safety and preparedness.

By learning and practicing first aid, surveyors can protect themselves and others, reduce the impact of injuries, and contribute to a safer working environment. It is important for every trainee to understand that first aid is not just a skill but a responsibility towards human life.
